Jeff O'Neill Done in Toronto?

Its beginning to look more and more like Jeff O'Neill will not play another game for the Toronto Maple Leafs. Sources out of Toronto have him not playing tonight for the Maple Leafs in the Final Pre Season Game. He was benched the last game he played against Ottawa and has not proven himself to Coach Paul Maurice during Practices. Maurice and O'Neill have a tedious relationship going back to their days in Carolina. Numerous Newspapers and Tv stations are reports that O'Neill will either start the season int he press box or will be sent to the minors and requested to leave them team. He would not be expected to join the Toronto Marlies. Other rumours have Toronto working out a deal to trade O'Neill and Tellqvist together to a Western Confernece team. Bates Battaglia looks like he has earned the roster spot that O'Neill will give up.

Summit Series = Annoyance Series

I dunno about the rest of you, but the Summit Series is really getting to me. Media cannot stop mentioning it. I hear it all the damn time. Every time TSN or Sportsnet does a "Top Ten" thing, they always manage to squeeze in a play from the Summit Series. Yeah sure it was a good time and many people have fond memories of the series, but can we drop the media coverage of this thing? I mean Canadians have been relishing over this thing for years, and it still seems like it just happened yesterday. There's a TV series, there's a movie, there's a book, newspapers, magazines, interviews, etc, etc, etc. DROP IT ALREADY! We know how it happened, and all of us could probably retell the story while under the influence of heavy drugs and alcohol. It was 34 years ago! Can the hockey world focus on anything better and more recent than that? Apparently not.

Devils In Big Time Cap Trouble

Bob Mckenzie Posted a fanastic Article on tsn today about the salary cap troubles facing the New Jeresy Devils (http://www.tsn.ca/tsn_talent/columnists/bob_mckenzie/)

On further inspection of what the devils are facing, it seems they are in dire cap problems. Lets take a look at the players New Jeresy has signed.

Forwards:
Patrik Elias - $6.0 million
Scott Gomez - $5 million
John Madden - $3.893 million
Jamie Langenbrunner - $2.8 million
Sergei Brylin - $1.52 million
Jason Wiemer - $950,000
Jay Pandolfo - $836,000
Grant Marshall - $760,000
Zach Parise - $703,000
Cam Janssen - $450,000
Michael Rupp - $450,000

11 Forwards: $23.2

Defencemen:
Brian Rafalski - $4.2 million
Colin White - $3 million
Dan McGillis - $2.2 million
Richard Matvichuk - $1.368 million
Brad Lukowich - $1 million

5 Defencemen: $11.8

Goalies:
Martin Brodeur - $5.2 million
Scott Clemmensen - $500, 000

2 Goalies: $5.7

Retired/Not Playing:
Vladimir Malakhov - $3.6 million
Alexander Mogilny - $3.5 million

2 Players: $7.1

TOTAL: 48.0

Unsigned:
Brian Gionta - $3 Million *
David Hale - $1 Million *
Paul Martin - $1.5 Million *

* = Expected Salary requests

The Devils therefore have 18 players signed at 48.0 million, a team needs 20 players atleast at any given time. Lets say they sign all 3 restricted free agents at the asking prices. That will be 21 players on roster equaling out to $53.5 million. That is 9.5 million dollars over the cap. Lets cut the Devils some slack and say they will get out of Mogilny's salary for this year. That will knock them down to $50.0 Also John Madden has an injured Hernia, he will most likely not be ready till at least a month or 2 into season. That will buy the Devil some temporary Relief. Lets put them down to $46.1. However they are 1 forward short, so they will need to call up a minor league player at a salary of atleast $500,000. So they go back up to $46. 6. They are still $2.6 million dollars over the cap. They will now most likely trade Scott Gomez, getting a prospect or picks in return. That will take them down to $41.6 million + a player called up to replace gomez so back up to $42.1. So it is possible for the Devils to get under the cap, however when madden is ready to return he will need to be traded or salary equal to him must be dealt. The Devils were one of the better run teams during the last CBA. That can however not be said for the current state of the franchise. They overpaid for players such as Dan Mcgillis, John Madden, Brian Rafalski, Alex Mogilny and Vlad Malakov and they are paying for it now.

Leafs Cut Nine

The Toronto Maple Leafs have released a press statement annoucing 9 cuts made to the team, the following players have been assigned to the Marlies Training camp:

Forwards:
Jiri Tlusty
Robbie Earl
John Mitchell
Jeremy Williams
Kris Newbury

Defencemen:
Dominic D'Amour
Tyson Marsh
Jamie Sifers

Goalies:
Justin Pogge

That leaves Bates Battaglia, Ben Ondrus, Erik Westrum, Brett Engelhart, John Pohl and Alex Sugolobov fighting for 3 spots up front and Ian White, Carlo Colaiacovo, Staffen Kronwall, Marc Moro, Brendan Bell, Jay harrison and Andy Wozniewski fighting it out for 2-3 spots on defence. Along with the Battle for backup goalie between Mikael Tellqvist and J.S Aubin, this should be an interesting final week of camp

Leafs Trade Winds Blowing

The leafs are most likely to make some kind of trade before the rosters are finalized for the season. The leafs have 2 goalies in Aubin and Tellqvist who would have to clear waivers to be sent to the minors. They also have defencemen in Bell and Harrison who if they dont make the team will have to clear waivers. The Leaf goalies, who have looked excellent during the preseason, have started to attract attention around the league. Its very possible the leafs will package a goalie with a defenceman in an attempt to get some help up front or for a decent prospect or pick. The leafs do not want to lost these player for nothing on waivers.

Introduction - doman

Hi everyone I just wanted to introduce myself. I will be contributing to this blog with Buffalo Sabres information. I would like to thank Derwood for allowing me to contribute my 2 cents and I will be back with much more.

John Madden Injured

New Jeresy Devil's Forward John Madden has not recovered from Recent Hernia Surgery and does not seem to be close to rejoining the Devils for Training Camp. The Devils are looking at placing him on the Long Term Injury list therefore freeing up his salary from the cap until he is healthy enough to return.

Leafs Need Bondra, or do They?

The Bondra idea is very perplexing. You can look at it from two different perspectives. On the one hand, you have a guy that could potentially score 30+ goals if played with Sundin. Or, you could have a Bondra that scores much less than 30, and just turns into another Czerkawski. So what I am try say is that JFJ is possibly is thinking the same thing. What do I think? I think that they should get Bondra onboard immediately, because as far as I am concerned he could either help the team, which would be nice, or he could just do nothing and be a scratched from the line-up for half the season. Bondra is a much better offensive talent than Czerakawski is/was, so I think, that put in the right situation, Bondra could still excell for one season, and help the Leafs come close to at least making the playoffs.

Bondra to Leafs or Wings?

Sportsnet.ca is reporting that both the Red Wings and Maple leafs are looking at signing Peter Bondra to a contract

Jere Lehtinen signs two-year extension

The Dallas Stars have signed Jere Lehtinen to a 2 year contract extension worth 8 million dollars.

http://tsn.ca/nhl/news_story/?ID=177671&hubname=

4 million does seem like an excessive amount for Jere Lehtinen, Lehtinen I would think would fall more into the 3 million dollar player range.

The Toronto Maple Leafs have resigned forward Matt Stajan to a 2 year 1.75 million dollar deal. He will earn $800,000 this year and $950,000 next year.

<---- G.M. Garth Snow

For more information: http://tsn.ca/nhl/news_story/?ID=177223&hubname=

The New York Islanders continue to be run as an inept franchise where the owner obviousley thinks he knows alot more about hockey then the G.M. This is the most brutal contract that a team has signed a player too since the Islanders signed Yashin to a 10 year deal. The team better hop Dipietro has a healthy 15 years ahead of him. Garth Snow Have Fun!

Montreal Shoping for defencman

The Montreal Canadiens are shopping for a defenceman to add depth to a somewhat weak blueline which has lost Francis Bouillon till late november. According to La Presse out of Montreal they have spoke to former Buffalo Sabre Jason Woolley. Woolley is currently in negotiations with a Swiss Team.

Peter Bondra Update

Unsigned Free agent Peter Bondra continues to look for work. The Washington Capitals are no longer interested in his services and it seems likely Bondra will not find work until Anson Carter and Radek Dvorak have signed. He will most likely gain intrest from one of the teams that do not sign one of these players. Those interested may include Toronto and Detroit. Look for Bondra to sign sometime during training camp on a 1 year deal for between $500,000-$750,000.

Mike Keenan to......Toronto??

According to the Vancouver Province, Rumours should begin shortly speculating that Mike Keenan will join the Maple Leafs in some capacity. The most likely scenerio for this would be if the Leafs struggle early. Its very possible you could see something very similar to what happened last year with the Raptors. John Ferguson Jr. will be quickly fired and Mike Keenan would be hired on very shortly afterwards. Mike Keenan has always let it be known that Toronto is his dream job and JFJ is defintly on a very short leash in Toronto.

(Sources out of Florida are now suggesting that Mike Keenan was told by the owner of the Florida Panther, Alan Cohen, to either Resign Immediatly or be fired. Its becoming very obvious that Keenan lost a power struggle with Coach and Friend Jacques Martin.)

Shane Doan seeks Contract Extension

According to the Arizona Republic, upcoming unrestricted free agent Shane Doan has let the Phoenix Coyotes know that he would like to sign a long term Contract before the start of the season.

Radek Dvorak Update

The Ny Post reports the New York Rangers continue to talk to Radek Dvorak as they try to bring him back to the rangers. They believe he could help them greatly in a penalty killing role as they have lost quite a few of their regular penalty killers from last year. According to the Post the Detroit Red Wings and St Louis Blues also have intrest in Dvorak's Services

The Vancouver Canucks were very interested at one point, but that intrest has gone down as Dvorak has not lowered his asking price into a fittable amount for the Canucks payroll

Ilya Bryzgalov Signs 2 year Deal

Ilya Bryzgalov has signed a 2 year contract with the Anaheim Mighty Ducks. The contract averages about 1.25 millon over the 2 years. Bryzgalov will fight with J.S Gigure for the #1 goaltender spot on the team

Jim Dowd To Sign with Devils

The New Jeresy Devils are close to signing Jim Dowd. A depth move for New Jeresy as they are short on depth. Most likely will be a 2 way 1 year contract. This will be Dowd's second stint with the Devils.

Flames sign forward Andrei Taratukhin

The Calgary Flames have signed Russian Rookie Andrei Taratukhin to a 2 year deal.

Daily Maple Leaf Rumours

- The Anson Carter sweepstakes continues to wind down with with Toronto and Detroit the only teams seemly still showing intrest at this point. The Columbus Blue Jackets have denied any intrest at all in Carter. Most sources point to Carter most likely Signing with Detroit before the end of the week.

- The Leafs continue to finalize a 2 or 3 year deal with Matt Stajan. The teams will be for about 1 million to 1.25 million a year. Rumours also continue to swirl that the leafs trying to trade Stajan, a natural centre for a young fairly inexpensive winger. The latest rumour has Stajan going to Nashville for Martin Erat. This makes alot more sense then the Zherdev rumours from a few weeks ago and the contracts would line up quite nicely as Erat makes approx $1.6 million dollars.

Devils Come calling for Lachance

The New Jeresy Devils have invited Scott Lachance to trying camp on a try out basis.

Evgeni Malkin Signs Finally with Pittsburgh

The Pittsburgh Penguins have signed Evgeni Malkin to a 3 year rookie entry level contract

Toronto Maple Leafs Preview

There has been much debate on sports shows, talk radio and fan blogs about what the maple leaf lines will look like this year. Below I present what I believe makes the most sense right now line wise for the Toronto Maple Leafs as the roster stands now. This could change with the addition of another free agent or a trade.

Forwards:
Alex Steen Mats Sundin Alexei Ponikarovsky
Darcy Tucker Kyle Wellwood Jeff O'Neill
Nik Antropov Mike Peca Chad Kilger
TBD Matt Stajan John Pohl

Defence:
Tomas Kaberle Pavel Kubina
Bryan Mccabe TBD
Hal Gill TBD

Goaltender:
Andrew Raycroft
TBD

Camp Battles:

Forward
There will be a battle in camp for a spot on the 4th line or higher depending who wins it at camp and how much potiential they show. There is also a bench spot available. This spot could belong to one of Alex Suglobov, Bates Battaglia, Ben Ondrus, Erik Westrum and even Robbie Earl or recent 1st round draft pick Jiri Tlustly. It would not be out of the question for Tlustly to make the team if he proves himself ready. He spent last year playing among men in the czech league. If he does not make the team this year, look for him to challenge for a spot in 07/08. Most scouts Say Tlustly is almost NHL ready. Early Favourites for the 2 free forward spots would point to Bates Battaglia because of his relationship with Paul Maurice and Alex Suglobov because of his scoring potential and contract. Another Battle will be who plays with Mats Sundin. Alex Ponikarovsky showed great chemistry late in the season with Sundin and should find himself lined up with him once the season starts. Antropov will also get a look on Sundin's Line. The Leafs would love to have Alex Steen prove in camp he is ready for a 1st line role and a year spent playing on a line with Sundin would do great for his development. Look for Kyle Wellwood to take a 2nd line centre postion this year and continue his development into a dynmaic Offensive centre. Jeff O'Neill and Darcy Tucker would provide scoring and toughness on the line to make up for Wellwood's smaller stature. Mike Peca will most likely centre a 3rd line shutdown line along with Chad Kilger who will look to knock the other team's #1 line off kilter most nights. Matt Stajan could also be added to this line to develop alongside Mike Peca much like Fernando Pisani did last year in Edmonton.

Defence
There is 3 available defence spots available as camp opens. Wade Belak will garner the spot as 7th defenceman/extra forward. That leaves Jay harrison, Ian White, Staffan Kronwall, Andy Wozniewski and Carlo Colaiacavo battling for 2 spots. While Kronwall may have more potential then any of these players, I truly believe he needs more seasoning in the AHL. Wozniewski is also a project still and not as NHL proven or ready as the remaining Candidates. Colaiacavo goes into camp expected to win a top 4 job on the Maple Leafs Blueline. If he is unable to make them team in camp, expect a trade as this is about his last chance to prove himself to the Leaf Brass. That leaves one spot for either Ian White or Jay Harrison. Both in their own ways proved last year they are ready for the NHL. Ian White looks like he could develop into another Brian Rafalski. Harrison on the other hand provided grit and a worth effort along the lines of Former Maple Leaf Defenceman Jason Smith. The job will go to the player the Leafs believe they need more, with the early favourite odds going to Ian White. Among the the top 2 defensive lines look for Kubina and Kaberle to play together as they showed a dynamic chemistry playing together on the Czech National team. Mccabe will most likely line up with White or Colaiacovo depending on who makes the team. Hal Gill will anchor the 3rd defensive line with either Wade Belak or another of the young defensemen.

Goaltender
Andrew Raycroft is unquestionably the #1 goaltender on the Maple Leafs. If he does not rebound from the disaster that was his play last year, the leafs go nowhere and are stuck with Jim Carey #2. If he can regain the form he had in his Calder Winning rookie year, the Leafs are set in goal for the next 3 years. Look for Raycroft to be closer to his Rookie Year then his injury plagued season last year. The backup fight is between J.S Aubin and Mikael Tellqvist. Most signs point to Aubin winning this job, as he proved himself very capable down the stech last season. Whoever doesnt make the team will likely be traded as Justin Pogge will be cemented as Greg Gilbert's #1 Goaltender in the AHL with the Marlies.

Mike Keenan Fired!

The Florida Panthers have fired G.M Mike Keenan. Keenan had 3 years left on his deal with Florida. This news comes as quite a suprise as no whispers were going around about the depature of Keenan.

For More:

http://tsn.ca/nhl/news_story/?ID=176329&hubname=

(Update: In a team statement sunday afternoon, The Panthers informed the media that Mike Keenan resigned from his post and has been replaced by Jacques Martin who will take a dual role as GM/Coach of the Florida Panthers)

Dvorak to New York Rangers?

Newspaper reports out of New York are claiming that the New York Rangers and Radek Dvorak are nearing a contract. Dvorak previous played with the Rangers a few years back before a trade to Edmonton. Its believed the Vancouver Canucks and possibly the Toronto Maple Leafs are also interested in his services.

Saturday, September 02, 2006

Allison to Philly?

Jason Allison and the Philadelphia Flyers have had discussions the past few days and are 1 of 3 or 4 teams speaking to Allison at the moment. Allison will likely sign a deal soon with one of these teams on a 1 year deal for up to 1.5 or 2 million dollars.

Brian Leetch to Rangers?

It is seeming more and more likely that Brian Leetch will sign before training camp with the New York Rangers. This has been his wish all along and he has had numerous talks with G.M Glen Sather this past week. Leetch has already informed Edmonton that he has no intrest in signing with the Oilers. There is talk he could sign back with Boston, but this seems highly unlikely as Boston has much depth at the defensive position. If Leetch does sign with the Rangers, look for them to deal a defenceman. Possibly Michal Rozsival to Edmonton.

Matt Stajan and Maple Leafs talk Contract

The Leafs and Matt Stajan continue to work towards a new deal. Sources are confirming that stajan's agent and G.M John Ferguson Jr. have agreed on a salary base of just over 1 million dollars per year. Whats holding up the contract being signed however is the Leafs hope that stajan will sign a 3 year deal. The Stajan camp is wanting a 1 or 2 year deal max as they feel over the next season or 2 , Matt will prove himself through his development to be worth much more the 1 million per year.

Carolina signs Brad Isbister

As rumored here yesterday, Brad Isbister has signed with the Carolina Hurricanes. Its a 1 year deal worth $600,000.

An ok pickup for Carolina. As long as he is not expected to play a 2nd line role like some people have stated he is. He cannot produce enough goals for more then a 3rd or 4th line position.

Dmitri Kalinin signs contract

TSN is reporting that Defenceman Dmitri Kalinin has signed a new 2 year deal with the buffalo sabres. No terms were disclosed.

Brad Isbister to sign with Carolina?

According to tsn.ca , Brad Isbister is close to signing with the Carolina Hurricanes.

"Carolina is also believed to be inching towards signing free agent forward Brad Isbister.
Providing the two sides can come to terms, Isbister will help fill the void left by the absence of Cory Stillman. Stillman underwent shoulder surgery on Friday and is expected to miss up to 35 games to start the season." - http://tsn.ca/nhl/news_story/?ID=175693&hubname=

The pickup of Brad Isbister will in no way replace Cory Stillman. Isbister is no more then a 3rd or 4th line forward, good for about 10 goals per year.

Remeber to check out our new message boards: http://insidehockeyrumours.com/discussion

David Tanabe signs with Carolina

As rumored on this website last week, the Carolina Hurricanes have signed Defenceman David Tanabe. Its a 1 year deal for $900,000.

Marleau wants out of San Jose?

There are rumours floating around the net, that Patrick Marleau is requesting a trade out of San Jose. I wouldnt put much faith into these rumours, however it is possible that Marleau is not happy being a 2nd line centre and fully believes he is talented enough to be a front line player on most teams. Its something to keep an eye on as Marleau's name has popped up in many rumours the past few weeks

J.P Dumont To Nashville Official

TSN is reporting that the Nashville Predators have signed J.P Dumont to a 2 year 4.5 million dollar deal

http://tsn.ca/nhl/news_story/?ID=175685&hubname=nhl

Linden will sign in Vancouver

The Vancouver Sun is reporting that Trevor Linden will be signed with Vancouver before the start of training camp. It will be a 1 year deal well under 1 million dollars.

Tim Connelly out for start of season

TSN reports that Tim Connelly of the Buffalo Sabres will not be ready to start Training camp as he is feeling the effects of yet another concussion. This is another blow to a Sabres team who have already lost J.P Dumont up front and must be a cause of concern for Connelly as he has already had numerous severe concussions in his short career

http://tsn.ca/nhl/news_story/?ID=175664&hubname=nhl

J.P Dumount to Nashville??

RDS out of Montreal reports that J.P Dumont will sign today with the Nashville Predators. This is quite a suprise as most reports had him going to Detroit. A good signing for Nashville depending on how much theyve paid him.

Jan Hrdina to Europe

The exodus of Former NHLers to Europe continues as former Columbus Blue Jacket Jan Hrdina has signed with HV71 JONKOPING OF THE SWEDISH ELITE LEAGUE.

Conroy on his way out of LA?

According to Hockeybuzz.com, The L.A Kings have held discussions on sending Craig Conroy to Washington.

http://www.hockeybuzz.com/blog.php?post_id=2690

This does make sense for both teams, as the washington capitals could use a vetern centre to play with Ovechkin and the Kings are retooling through a youth movement up front with New GM Dean Lombardi rebuilting the the team in a different direction as before.

NHL Rookies - Forwards

This years crop of NHL Rookies, while not as high powered as last years group, should be a dynamic group of talent. The following is a list of the 5 possible top rookie candidates at Forward.

Evgeni Malkin - Pittsburgh: Highly skilled Russian is the early favourite for rookie of the year. Could be as talented as Alex Ovechkin.

Rob Schremp - Edmonton: High scoring OHL allstar. The question isnt about his talent, it is about his attitude.

Patrick O'Sullivan - L.A: Like Team USA teammate Schremp, Sullivan is extremly talented player who really came into his own in the AHL last year. Because of a very rough childhood, the only question about Sullivan is his mental makeup.

Gilbert Brule - Columbus: Plays Much bigger then his 5'10, 175 pound frame. A dynamic scorer in the WHL and proved in his brief time with Columbus last year that he can handle the size and speed of the NHL.

Wojtek Wolski - Colorado: Could play a top 6 role on a Colorado Team that does not have the offensive depth of a few years ago.

Unrestricted Free Agents Left

As the news has been slow this weekend, I thought we could take a look at the remaining free agents along with teams either that have shown intrested or where this player would fit in best.

Serge Aubin: ??

Ottawa interested in P.J Axelsson

According to reports out of the Ottawa Sun, The Senators have inquired about aquiring P.J Axelsson.

Tanabe back to Carolina

According to Sources out of Carolina, The Hurricanes are interested in bringing back David Tanabe who played with Carolina previously. He would be brought in to replace Aaron Ward who signed with the New York Rangers. This makes sense for both sides, Carolina could use the defensive depth and Tanabe would go back to the team he started his NHL career with

Zherdev Rumours.

There is numerous Zherdev rumours coming out of Both Toronto and Columbus. The discussion was that the leafs and columbus were working on a deal that would send Nikolai Zherdev to Toronto for Matt Stajan and a draft pick. This deal was shot down as false by Doug MacLean, the Blue Jackets GM. I have to agree with Maclean that this deal has not been discussed as reported. Matt Stajan is not more then a 2nd or 3rd line player and Zherdev has the potential to be a First Line All Star Forward. However I would not be suprised if Toronto and Columbus are discussing some kind of deal for Zherdev. Its been well documented that Zherdev and Columbus are not on the best of terms and that Zherdev is willing to sit out the year without the contract he wants. To get Zherdev however, Toronto would need to offer more then just Matt Stajan, especially for cap reasons, and that draft pick would have to be a 1st rounder. I will follow this story and update if anything develops.

Daily Anson Carter Update

According to ESPN Insiders, the The Canadian Press is reporting that Phoenix, Detroit and Pittsburgh are the three clubs still showing some interest in Carter. No mention of the Maple leafs and this is the first world ive heard that Phoenix is interested in signing Carter and I find this hard to believe as they are pretty high up against the cap.

Eric Daze To Play This Year

According to Quebec Reports, Eric Daze wishes to play in the NHL this year. He could be a very productive gamble for any team willing to take a chance on a 6ft 6 forward with back problems. If healthy, Daze could provide a team with 25-30 goals for around .5 - 1 million dollars on a 1 year deal, maybe with incentives. I gotta believe the Leafs would be atleast curious into looking into him as an option up front. They showed last year with Lindros and Allison they are willing to give injured players a chance to prove themselves on 1 year deals

Edmonton Oilers discussing deal with Boston

Rumours out of edmonton suggest that the Oilers are looking towards Boston for help on defence. They have discussed a deal to bring Brad Stuart to Edmonton. No word on who would go back to Boston, but as Boston has a surplus of defenceman, it would most likely be one of edmontons young forwards

Detroit Pushing Hard for Dumont

According to the Canadian Press , The Detroit Red Wings may be favourites right now to sign J.P Dumont. Sources Im hearing have them discussing a long term deal with the Red Wings and this seems to be the most logical destination for Dumont at this time.

Markus Naslund wishes to remain a canuck

The Vancouver Province is reporting that Markus Naslund is still commited to the Canucks and does not wish to be traded. This is in response to Numerous trade rumours out of vancouver mentioning his name

J.P Dumont Update

According to TSN.CA , J.P Dumont's agent has narrowed prespective signing options down to 3 or 4 teams. The Montreal Canadiens are not one of these teams and according to his agent, theyve never been in contact together.

http://tsn.ca/nhl/news_story/?ID=175107&hubname=

This could just be a public ploy to pull more intrest for his client, especially from the Habs

Brian Leetch Update

While the Edmonton Oilers continue to try to convince Brian Leetch to Join the team, the Edmonton Journal is reporting that the Oilers have been unable to convince him to move out west.

"We were kicking some tires there, but it's a dead issue now," Kevin Prendergast, the Oilers VP of Hockey Operations, told the Journal. "Brian, from what I understand, wants to stay in the East, where he's played all his career. If he doesn't get a contract with a team out there, I guess maybe he'll retire."

Bergeron and Bruins nearing deal

According to the Boston Globe, The Bruins and center Patrice Bergeron are closing in on a new long-term contract. The deal should be finalized within the next week and should average out to around 3.5-4.5 million dollars a year.

(UPDATE: According to tsn.ca (http://tsn.ca/nhl/news_story/?ID=175013&hubname=), Boston and Bergeron have finalized a 5 year, 23.75 million dollar deal that averages 4.75 million a year.)

Philadelphia To Upgrade Defence from Within

According to the Philadelphia Inquirer, Flyer Coach Ken Hitchcockplans to utilize winger Sami Kapanen on defense during training camp and exhibition games. He realizes that Philadelphia may have a lack of mobility on there defence and he believe Kapanen can help rectify this.

The Carter Chase Updated

Sources today seem to point towards the Maple Leafs falling behind other teams in the attempts to sign Anson Carter. Toronto's inablity to trade Nik Antropov is causing Carter to seriously have to consider signing with another team. The teams most interested other then the leafs, would be Detroit and Carolina with Pittsburgh monitoring the situation. It is impossible for the leafs to sign Carter, without shedding Antropov's salary. The Leafs want Carter and Carter wants to play for the Leafs, however until the leafs ditch some salary it cant happen. If the leafs fail in their attempt to sign Carter, they will look to other unsigned free agents (kvasha , bondra, kozlov, park) who may be available for a cheaper salary.

AHL Toronto Marlies to Name Assistant Coaches Soon

The Toronto Marlies will annouce the 2 assistants to head coach Greg Gilbert within the next few days. The 3 finalist for the position are believed to be Doug Gilmour, Rick Vaive and Bob Mcgill, all former Maple leafs.

Mike Dunham

Goaltender Mike Dunham continues to look for a team to play nets for next year in a backup role. His agents have had discussions with Vancouver and Dallas. Vancouver is also continuing to talk with Steve Shields as he has a former partnership with Loungo and Dallas is also looking into Brian Boucher.

Calgary Flames update

According to the Calgary Sun, Flames Prospect Andrei Taratukhin has given his Russian team, Yaroslavl Lokomotiv, a letter of resignation. The Flames are monitoring the Evgeni Malkin situation before offering Taratukhin a contract

Buffalo Sabres Update

The Buffalo News reports that goalie Ryan Miller, is seeking a $3 million salary for next year and may hold out of training camp unless a deal is signed. The sabres will not explore trading Martin Biron as he requested, untill Ryan Miller is signed

Carolina Search for Forward

Carolina Huricannes continue to search for a forward to replace Cory Stillman. They have spoken to Jason Allison as reported and are also expected to speak to Anson Carter's agent sometime this week.

St Louis will enter the Brian Leetch Talks?

Sources are pointing to Brian Leetch in the next few days having discussion with the St Louis Blues

Dallas Stars News

The Dallas Stars continue to look for a backup for Marty Turco. The following players have recieved intrest from the Stars: Mike Dunham, Steve Shields and Brian Boucher.

Sunday, August 20, 2006

Rick Dipietro unsigned

NY Islanders GM Garth Snow will not be allowed to negotiate with Rick Dipietro until Owner Charles Wang returns from vacation in 2 weeks. This is just an other example of the owner of the islanders taking way too much of a hands on approach with this team. This will scare other players from signing with the islanders in the future

Rem Murray to Europe

Unable to garner a contract from the Edmonton Oilers, Rem Murray has signed on with HIFK Helsinki in Finland

Jason Allison

Jason Allison's Agent has been contacted by Carolina. Its believe they would like to bring him in to replace Cory Stillman at about 1 million dollars on a 1 year deal

Anson Carter Update

Anson Carter's agents continue to ask for a 2 year contract at 3 million dollars per year. No teams are willing to bite at this and most people inside the nhl are saying that he wont see more then 2 million a year and will have to prove last year was no fluke. Again , if he lowers his asking price to 2 million a year, it will be a battle between Toronto and Detroit for his services.

Anson Carter

Ive had numerous people ask me for an Anson Carter update. From what I can tell, right now everything is stuck in a holding pattern. The Leafs have told Carter's agents that they would like to sign him. However they need to ditch some salary first. The fact that Matt Stajan isnt signed yet, makes me curious as to if the leafs are still trying to trade him. He was being offered along with Antropov around the league a few weeks ago, however at that time no offers the leafs recieved were what they wanted for a player of his potential and caliber. While the leafs will take a mid range draft pick for Antropov, for stajan they would request a top end draft pick and/or an nhl ready prospect. So everything is on hold, till the Leafs figure out what they can do to sign Carter. Its well known knowledge around the league that Carter wants to be a maple leaf this season. He wanted to be one last year as well. If the leafs deal falls through, at that time he will look to sign in Detroit or Pittsburgh. Both teams have made inquires, maybe as far as putting a contract on the table.

Canucks Rumour

The canucks have spoken to Valeri Bure's agents to inquire about his health and if he hopes to play in the NHL this season. Its believed the Canucks have moderate intrest in bringing Bure in as he would provide them with some vetern offense up front and he should be a fairly cheap signing on a 1 year deal. Any deal would average around 1 - 1.5 million dollars with the possiblity of some incentives. I feel Bure would be more of a fall back position for Canucks as Im hearing more and more they are interested in bringing Radek Dvorak on board fairly shortly

Inside NHL Rumours Email

Hey All,

As the site here builds, we hope to add many features. We eventually hope to register our own domain, where we can add in message boards, a chat feature and guest bloggers. Our first step for interaction between you the reader and us will be our email. You can reach us at insidenhlrumours@gmail.com . Unlike other sites, we will provide you with any information we know entirely free. Well I will never guarentee anything that goes up here as fact, I never post anything I havent verified with a source(s) or heard from media outlets that atleast the idea is floating around. Lets not kid ourselves, most of these rumours will never come true, and not because its never been mentioned, becuase GM's are constantly throwing names around to try to make a deal. However I have learned that where there is smoke there is often fire and these rumours usually lead to something. What I hope to provide with this website, is a 1 stop website that is constantly updated with any new NHL news, updates or rumours. I enjoy your questions and feedbacks and will try to respond to them all personally. Keep checking back this weekend for further updates and rumours

Naslund to Philly heating up

Various sources are stating that Vancouver and Philadephia continue to try to hammer out a deal to bring Markus Naslund to Philly. At first I didnt think this deal would happen, but word out of Vancouver is that Naslund isnt completely happy with the direction of the team and would welcome a change. Philly is seeing this as a chance to make Forsberg happy long term in Philly. Any trade would include Simon Gagne going back the other way to Vancouver. Other parts including players and draft picks would be needed to make this happen. Ill keep an eye on this and update when more information becomes available.

More NHLers To Eurpoe

- Former Columbus Blue Jackets Defenceman Radoslav Suchy has signed a 3 year contract with Swiss club ZSC Lions

- Columbus Blue Jacket Nikoli Zherdev has set a deadline for next week to reach an agreement with the team or he will Sign in Russia

Leetch To Edmonton Update

RDS out of montreal is reporting the possiblity of Brian Leetch signing with Edmonton now. All sources ive heard are pointing to this deal getting done unless 1 of the teams Leetch perfers in the east (New York based teams) offers him a contract soon. If Leetch has to go out West, he wants to do it in Edmonton

http://rds.ca/hockey/chroniques/210989.html

Ill have more updates tomorrow afternoon. I am travelling in the morning. Look for updates sometime in the early afternoon.

Gomez To Calgary?

A trade rumour coming out of calgary suggest that the flames and Devils are still discussing a trade of Scott Gomez to Calgary. Matthew Lombardi now that hes signed seems to be the most mentioned name going the other way. I can only see this deal happening if the flames throw in some prospects and/or draft picks. NJ is definetly trying to trade Gomez though to free up money for Gionta

Small Signings

St Louis has signed Defenseman Jamie Rivers
Pittsburgh has signed Goaltender Andrew Penner

Dvorak to Vancouver

Sources out west indicate Vancouver and Radek Dvorak are finalizing a 1 year deal for Dvorak to take Anson Carter's place on the wing. Vancouver is resigned to the fact they cannot afford to bring back Anson Carter at his salary Wishes

Anson Carter Daily Update

Darren Dreger of Tsn.ca is reporting this continues to be a 2 horse race between Toronto and Detroit, it will most likely come down to the team that comes closes to the 3 million a year Carter was hoping for at the start of the free agency period

Habs/Islander Deals

Several websites and sources have reported the following trade rumour:

To Islanders: Mike Komisarek, Radek Bonk
To Canadiens: Radek Martinek, Jeremy Colliton, Sean Bergenheim

Montreal would be able to ditch Radek Bonk's salary however they would need to throw in there best defensive prospect in Mike Komisarek. Coming back would be 3 depth players with low salaries. This may afford Montreal to cap space to make a run at J.P Dumont. J.P Dumonts agents are awaiting a montreal offer before settling on a team.

Cory Stillman Injury

Cory Stillman has undergone shoulder Surgery and will be out for 3-4 months. This could prove to be a tough blow to a carolina team who have lost alot of players already through free agency.

Late Night Vancouver Rumours

For all You folks on the West Coast, there has been a few Vancouver Canuck Rumours floating around the internet tonight. The first has Matt Cooke garnering Intrest from NY Rangers. No word on who would go back to Vancouver. The other Rumour has Philly and Vancouver discussing a Marcus Nasland Blockbuster. The Cooke deal would make some sense as It would free Vancouver up some cap space to explore available free agents. Nasland to Philly though? Forget it. Vancouver will not trade their marquee forward especially when they have him signed to a very reasonable deal for the next few years.

New Updates and Rumours coming tomorrow.. Please check back often. There will also be a new blogger tomorrow who has a firm ear to the ground for all the latest rumours and signings. I will never guarentee these rumours to come true. They are called rumours for a reason but I try to have very reliable sources before I post them. As you can see this website listed the fitzpatrick deal and Vishnevski deal before they were finalized and also had the Malkin rumour hours before Kevin Gibson from AM640 published it. I hope you all enjoy reading these rumours and feel free to email me at any time. I am thinking about things that can be done with this site and would love to here your feedback

Rory Fitzpatrick signs with Canucks!!

As predicted here 48 hours ago, Rory Fitzpatrick has signed a 1 year deal with the vancouver canucks

Matthew Lombardi

Resigns with calgary flames

Brain Leetch Update

Sources seem to indicate the most likely destination for Brian Leetch is Edmonton. Leetch would love to stay in the eastern conference however he is intrigued by Edmonton's situation and prospects for this year and if the dollar amount is right and no offers match up in Eastern Conference he should be an Oiler by September

Malkin to Montreal Update

As crazy as this trade rumour seems to be...there is more and more sources coming out that atleast montreal has discussed this trade or inquired about it. These sources seem to be Nhl and ex NHL players. However I still believe this trade could and would never happen

Maple Leafs Update

The Leafs continue to have discussions with Anson Carter and his agent. However any deal cannot be completed until the leafs are able to clear some salary. The leafs have offered Antropov to Chicago and Detroit, however the leafs are going to have to most likely throw in a low level prospect to have a team pick up antropov's salary. Its believed the leafs are offering Cater somewhere in the vicinty of 1.5-1.75 million over 2 years and Anson is asking still for around 2.25-2.5 million. Sources seem to indicated that he will eventually either sign with Toronto or Detroit withen the next 3-4 days

Tarnstrom Update

Dick Tarnstrom has an out clause in his europe contact if he gets an offer from an NHL team

Phil Kessel Signed!!!

Boston has signed Phil Kessel to a 3 year rookie contract, Kessel will leave college and immediatly join boston's training camp in september

Montreal/Pittsburgh Rumour - Malkin to Montreal

I have come across a Montreal/Pittsburgh Trade rumour. I have talked to some people and can say this trade will not happen and has not even been discussed. However it is interesting to ponder. Talk to anyone in the pittsburgh organization and they will tell you that Malkin along with Sidney Crosby and Mark Andre Fleury are untouchables. The trade was rumoured as follows:

Souray, Ryder, Ribeiro, Aebischer + 1st round pick for Malkin

For salary cap purposes alone, this trade would never happen. Pittsburgh cannot afford to take on 10 million dollars almost in salary.

Malkin resigns from Metallurg Magnitogorsk

Evgeni Malkin has given his 2 weeks notice to his russian team and should be signed in Pittsburgh within the next few days

Steve Shields and Rory Fitzpatrick to Vancouver

A couple of ex sabres about to sign with Vancouver, Final contract details being worked on, both deals should be finalized by Friday.

Mighty Ducks Signing

Defenceman Ian Moran has signed a 1 year deal with the ducks providing some depth on defence

Eric Daze Out till 2007??

Sources are pointing to Eric Daze taking this year off to heal his bad back. It is too bad to see a good player like Daze's career stalled with such a bad injury. If he does play this year , he would be a good cheap pick up for any team looking to take a chance on a 6ft 6 winger who can plot 30 goals a year when healthy. Lets all hope Eric gets healthy soon and gets his career back on track

Owen Nolan Update

Owen Nolan and Phoenix have agreed in principle to a 1.25 million dollar 1 year deal pending his physical results. Im suprised Nolan is recieving this much and if he doesnt produce he will be a pretty big hit to Phoenix's cap next year
